Portugal Street, Cambridge

This residential scheme in central Cambridge replaces the old Cambridge University Fives and Rackets Club in Portugal Street.

The client Aquila Investments Limited appointed Barber Casanovas Ruffles as their architects to design this speculative scheme.

The design strategy looked to rework the urban and contextural qualities of the existing and mainly Victorian residential area in a contemorary manner.

The town houses use traditional materials and construction. Buff brickwork with architectural concrete details. The windows are a mixture of wood and metal. The roofs are finished in slate. The barrel vaulted studio unit roof, gutters and downpipes are pre-weathered zinc. Garage and open car parking has been provided to the rear of the properties.
