Lakenheath School

This pre-kindergarten school received the USAFE all United Kingdom Merit Design Award.

As part of the briefing process we need the recently completed and adjoining houses by the devloper to argue the case for an alternative design approach.

The building provides eight classrooms grouped in pairs either side of a primary circulation route together with ancillary accomodation. Each classroom has full ambulant disabled support facilities.

To enable the existing and new facility to remain at one level, the classrooms are sunken into the existing land form. This manoeuvre provides the necessary privacy and security for the young yet still provides continuity as they develop and move up through the school.

The building structure is a steel frame with a brick south elevation with minimal glazing. All classrooms face either east or west. Low morning and afternoon sun is controlled by external brieze solaire louvres. The longitudinal elevations are full width proprietry aluminium screens with a mixture of glass and panels.
